About the Session
Claims 101 introduces the core concepts underlying claims and dispute resolution — the specialty of AACE International’s Claims & Dispute Resolution (CDR) Subcommittee. The session offers project participants a clearer view into how claims are analyzed, and how their own work product can influence the schedule delay, disruption, and damages quantification analyses that experts rely on — along with related assessments of entitlement and responsibility. Attendees will also see how claims analysis intersects with other AACE technical areas, including Contract Management, Cost Estimating, Decision and Risk Management, Earned Value, Planning & Scheduling, Project & Cost Control, and Value Management. Whether claims are already part of your work or you’re just curious to learn more, this is a great foundational primer for anyone interested in the practice area.
About the Speaker
John J. Ciccarelli, PE, CCP, PSP, FAACE Hon. Life brings more than 35 years of expert consulting and project advisory experience across the global engineering and construction industries. His work spans dispute resolution and litigation support, construction cost assessments and audits, risk management, project controls, and construction oversight — with a particular focus on schedule delay, loss of productivity, and cost damage quantification. John has supported claims and litigation matters at every stage, from change order review through discovery, mediation, settlement, expert report preparation, and testimony at formal legal proceedings.
Before joining J.S. Held, John was a Senior Vice President at Marsh Risk Consulting, and previously held management roles at Deloitte, Exponent, and The Nielsen-Wurster Group. He began his career in construction management as an owner’s project engineer for the Port Authority of NY/NJ, followed by project engineering and management roles with a general contractor and a concrete subcontractor.
John holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware and an MBA from Rutgers University. He is a licensed PE in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, a Chartered Engineer and internationally registered PE in Australia, and holds AACE International’s CCP and PSP certifications. He is a Fellow of AACE International, a former AACE Board member and President, former chair of the AACE Certification Institute Board, and remains active on the Technical Board.
