Presentation Overview: Earned Value metrics like CPI and SPI are the industry’s go-to indicators for project health—but what if they’re giving you a false sense of security? In this session, Onur Yazici explores the hidden pitfalls of relying too heavily on these metrics without context. Drawing from his paper, “CPI and SPI: Potential Misleading Scenarios and Corresponding Remedies,” Onur unpacks real-world examples where performance indexes look stellar on paper while projects quietly drift toward disaster.
He will explore scenarios such as front-loaded progress curves, over-performing non-critical tasks, and deceptive level-of-effort activities that artificially inflate performance indicators. The session offers practical remedies to help attendees detect red flags early and avoid the “CPI/SPI trap.” Expect a dynamic talk with sharp insights as we revisit how to make performance metrics work for us—not fool us…
