Abstract: Project team members and experts are not always accurate in how they analyze a
project’s forensic history. These inaccuracies range from using incorrect analysis methodologies
to “cherry-picking” only data that supports their case and everything in between. These mistakes
are common and happen for many different reasons. They can be due to an analyzer not having
enough experience or they can be made purposely in an attempt to mislead.

The authors will discuss ten biggest mistakes made in forensic analysis today and how to
recognize and confirm that each is in fact mistake. In addition to the identification, the paper will
also discuss the proper way to perform each analysis where the mistake was made, using lessons learned from project controls, forensic analysis/dispute resolution experience, and AACE’s Recommended Practices.

These top ten mistakes will be discussed in ascending order of importance starting with least
important, but the authors believe that all ten are vital to avoid when performing a forensic
analysis.
