I have been in the EPCMV industry for over 30 years and we are still utilizing Excel for Earned Value.  We list our deliverables and weight them by allocating budgeted hours.  I am very eager to buy software to replace our current excel workbook however I am receiving conflicting reviews about Earned Value software.  I would appreciate any favorable or unfavorable reviews for EV software. Thank you in advance.

We shared the same desire. For data analysis/pivot tables/graphs/charts, I do like the power and flexibility of Excel, though our teams run into issues on the EVM operations side with managing multiple contributors, keeping the integrity of the workbook, and standardizing conventions. I am also an advanced software developer, and finally coded a web-based application for our needs in EVM (we approach allocating budgeted hours as well). I released it to the public for free last year (with regular updates since and later including a paid option to help subsidize costs). I'd encourage you to have a look and would like to hear your feedback if you decide to try it => React EVM

This is a very old issue, where I, as you are, am part of it.

MS Project since version 4.0, Oracle Primavera (P3 to P6), even SAP's Project System module where always capable to give you the data you may use to analyze your project..

The major problem was the safety of the entry data. We have always felled into a "Garbage in - Garbage out" situation.

The only occasion where we were able to concentrate all the corporation data, to analyze in a good manner al the entered data was when we gave the so called "freedom" to pre analyze the data of each project, but we use a filtered consolidated spreadsheet that automatically put data on the Oracle's Hyperion database.

The major issue is the data safety and security.

After many years dealing with this issue (since 1993) I've also, at the end, fell down back into the arms of Excel, for analyzing, and/or for cleaning up data.

Only if your team has a equalized understanding of the EVM techniques you can "block" calculated excel cells, and try to use the consolidating software of your choice to major strategic analysis
