Great question.... I'm sure that there are many variations of progress reports floating around out there. The problem might be that each report will differ between companies and client requirements.
The better progress reports should include important / key milestone status as well as cost data & schedule (critical path) and maybe risk data.
Comparisons between a baseline vs. current period too. KPI status would be another great item to include.
Best reports will have a "realistic" forecast for determining future outcomes (not some random BS calculated numbers).
Also, a proposed recovery plan to achieve completion milestones.
Data should be vetted before publishing or your credibility will suffer!
