  • 1.  Trade Manpower Projections for Construction Projects

    Posted 04-09-2019 05:50 PM

I need to project trade manpower loading for planning purposes for a 100 Million dollar building project (30 month construction schedule). This project is currently in design. Can anyone point me to a RP or methodology to project trade manpower on a monthly basis for the main trades ie excavation, concrete, structure, curtain-wall, MEP trades etc.
    Thanks.

    Hello Abhimanyu,

You need to do this on excel or Primavera P6. there is simple way on excel as follows:

    - Make a table 30 month scale and trade on first column (Exc, concrete, Block work, MEP, flooring, plaster and paint..etc)
    - add a column in front of each trade titled with QTY (you need to do a rough estimate of the quantity )
    - add a column in front of the quantity column titles with " hourly rate" .. this is the production labor rate of the activity, EXAMPLES: exc. 2 hr/m3, concrete 30 Mhr/m3, finishing 45 Mhr/m2
    - add a column for the total hours required ( QTY* RATE) THEN divide by 8 hrs/day you will get No of labor required
    - Make a time scale schedule to complete the work (Exc: one month, concrete : 10 month, MEP : 20 month, finishing 18 month, testing and commissioning : two  month)
    - distribute the the total No of labor uniformly for each trade/activity's time scale

Hope this methodology to help you

    Amer,

Thanks. I will study this more. Look at the methodology I am proposing and let me have your comments.

Methodology Proposed for Manpower Calculations - Please Comment

I have shown below my proposed methodology for developing the trade manpower projection. The process is pretty onerous and based on a number of assumptions. I am trying to find if there is any historical data on the manpower curves for various project types.

The information available for the projects are as follows:
    Example:
Project Budget: XX Million Dollars (Range 40 to 250 Million Dollars)
Building Type: Residential, Medical, Lab, Athletics etc.
Construction Type: New Building, Renovation, steel or concrete
Construction Schedule: Range 24 to 36 Months
    Start and Finish Dates:
Task: Project manpower by major trades over the duration of the program.
Program: about 15 projects from 20 to 250 Million dollars
    Methodology Being Considered:
    1.       Find existing or develop EV S-Curve for building type
    2.       Adjust S Curve for project duration
    3.       Develop a simple bar chart schedule for the project construction duration showing trade construction line item duration
    4.       Breakout construction budget into trade costs
    5.       Identify labor component of trade budget
    6.       Calculate labor cost per day ($/d) for each trade (maybe from means)
    7.       Calculate total labor number
    8.       Distribute total labor over trade construction duration using a distribution (S) curve. Note: Item 1 may not be necessary in this case.
    9.       Repeat for 15 projects

There are so many factors to consider on this topic. I would do the excel manpower loaded in gantt format so it is easy to adjust. Yet, I would add an escalation column in case your trades feel something will be easier or more complex. It depends ** on what market, what testing is required, what specs say.... if you want a hand on this, I have nothing happening until Tuesday next week. I could help build. I use this method all the time to do change management labor studies. Mfriddle@projectxmanagement.com (no cost to you)
