    Hi all,

    Can you share your experience to categorise Cost with an unified or standardised breakdown like Construction Specification Institute(CSI)  50 divisions (50 Divisions - Wikipedia) or CESMM4 breakdown for infrastructure projects or RICS NRMs or own customised one or other professional bodies suggestions.

    Good day Clement,

    We have integrated many programs using both the Uniformat and the CSI estimating models.  Normally, we do not have any opportunity to advise which format is used, therefore, we integrate the costs based on what format is provided.  Most of the time is spent mapping the details of the cost estimate to the activities in the project.  The largest difference between the two is the Uniformat is much more detailed, so there is a larger mapping effort.  What is the question that you are seeking to answer? Are you trying to understand which is better for setting up an estimate? integrating with the project schedule? Validating to the costs integrated from the schedule based on the WBS map to the estimate?

    Thanks Mike,

    My question is

    Whats the best/better way to setting up an estimate with WBS/Work packages for a Rail project? Example, Starting as Earthworks as CSI recommendation or following other ways to categorise cost. 

    In my opinion, first we categorise budget and then capture Actual cost and analyse EV and prepare reports. 

    Categorisation is the important element for any mega projects (HS2 in the UK) or any unique projects (Hinkley point C, nuclear power project) for better control.
